"The Sorcerer's Apprentice" ORIGINAL ART FROM TASHA TUDOR'S BEDTIME BOOK

Tasha Tudor. 9 ½" x 8 ½"

Full page watercolor to illustrate the short story and printed as page [17] in Tasha Tudor's Bedtime Book, Platt & Munk, 1977. Unmounted piece of watercolor paper measuring 13 ¼ " x 11 ¼ ." The 9 ½" x 8 ½" image is fully reproduced in the book but in a milky sort of view. The vivid detail that Tudor painted in lost in the reproduction. The central image has the two main characters standing before a large fireplace with a boiling caldron - an alchemist's laboratory. There are numerous dark images: a skinned hare hanging on the wall, andirons that look like cobras, a bottle of blood, a mortar with two asps crawling out, etc. The cheeriest part of the whole picture is a brilliant blue night sky with stars twinkling. Tudor imparts a particularly interesting three dimensional view with a hawk, a small bird, and her banty rooster Chickahominy painted superimposed on the frame. Their action is outside the main image, as is a small sea weed detail with two fishes painted outside the frame to the left. The apprentice looks more the part of the innocent prince, but there is none of the sweetness and light of Tudor's earlier Book of Fairy Tales. There is residue of a gummed label in the top border outside the image, and a penciled $300.00 on the back.
