Tasha Tudor. ca. The exposed image measures 4 3/8" x 6 ¼ "
This pencil drawing was published on page of Fairy Tales from Hans Christian Andersen, illustrated by Tasha Tudor; New York, Oxford University Press, 1945. The scene is of a lonely female figure climbing a path toward a castle door. Lightning flashes in the night sky and trees bend before the storm. The image is unusual for Tudor at this stage (1944) in that the entire image is fully drawn in pencil. There are no open spaces in the drawing.
We have not examined the art out of its taped matting. Three hand-written notes on the back on the back of the artist's board: "Page 32," "It was a Fearful Nite," and in a red circle "#775." The last would refer to the job number at Oxford UP. The artist's board has been taped to the front mat for many years. Mat measures 9 3/4" x 11". Provided with a Letter of Provenance.
Signed T. Tudor, but not dated in lower right.
