DIAPARENE
Tudor, Tasha. New York: George A. Breon & Co., ca. 1958. 1st. 7 7/8" x 4 1/2" x 1 1/4"
Sample box illustrated by Tasha Tudor, cardboard band is present to hold the cover shut. The box shows light wear, This box carries design by Tasha Tudor with watercolor illustrations on all sides and inside the box. The designs are typical Tudor images with a loving and attentive mother, plants and antiques. There is also humor in two contrasting images of a frazzled mother who has to wash her daily load of diapers, and a mother relaxing under a sun umbrella because she uses a diaper service. This box contains the only instance we've seen where Tasha Tudor drew a contemporary television antenna into a painting. This was a sample box advertising diaper services for new mothers. Given to new mothers in hospital, the box has four small samples: Diaparene Baby Lotion (1 1/4 oz.), Diaparene Chloride Dusting Powder, 2 Diaparene Peri-Anal ointment in a foil containers. The box flaps open to reveal cut-outs containing the samples. Diaparene Chloride Ointment in a foil container seems never to have been in this sample. This example lacks any reference to a specific diaper service. Found in South Carolina. The poem from inside: There was an old woman who lived in a shoe, She had so many children, she didn't know what to do. Then she used diaper service, plus Diaparene, No "home-laundry" rash, now all is serene. For, direct to their door, antiseptic and white Come didies to babies' and mommie's delight. Distributed by Homemaker's Products corporation. Lacks the closing band.
